Abstract

The goal of this work is to analyze a battery of measures to alleviate the problems derived from urban transportation and to study the diverse responses to such measures as a function of participants' attitudinal profile. Two hundred and eighty-six drivers completed a questionnaire. Our results show that people prefer incentive actions and they oppose measures that may restrict automobile circulation. The preference for incentive policies is associated with a higher rating of the practical advantages of the private car and a stronger affective association with it. Opposition to restrictive measures is higher when drivers feel positive emotions when using their cars, whereas valuing the instrumental advantages of public transportation is related to advocating actions to restrict car use.
