Environmental care and place attachment: Perspectives for sustainability in schools

Cuidado del entorno y apego al lugar: perspectivas al tema de la sostenibilidad en las escuelas

Abstract

The growing interest in research about place attachment, or emotional bonds formed with places, derives from the acknowledgement of the role that these bonds can play in defining personal identity and establishing a sense of belonging to places that encourages pro-environmental behaviors. Situated in this subject field, this work studied the relation between place attachment and environmental care traces. Using instruments of direct observation and environmental assessment, the study observed the conservation status of a school environment in Florianópolis (Brazil). Additionally, the study related conservation status to the attachment to specific sectors of the school by self-administered questionnaire in a collective situation filled out by 508 students. The results showed positive and statistically significant correlations between place attachment and environmental conservation status, as well as statistically significant differences among different types of environments regarding each of these variables.

Resumen

El creciente interés por la investigación del apego al lugar, o los lazos emocionales que se crean con los lugares, parte del reconocimiento del papel que juegan estos lazos en la definición de la identidad personal y el desarrollo de sentimientos de pertenencia al lugar que fomentan comportamientos proambientales. En este contexto, el presente trabajo estudia la relación entre el apego al lugar y los índices de cuidado medioambiental. Empleando instrumentos de observación directa y de evaluación medioambiental, este estudio analiza el nivel de conservación de un ambiente escolar de Florianópolis (Brasil). Asimismo se relaciona dicho nivel de conservación con el apego a sectores concretos de la escuela a través de un cuestionario autoadmi- nistrado en situación colectiva a 508 estudiantes. Los resultados muestran correlaciones positivas y estadísticamente significativas entre apego al lugar y nivel de conservación, y entre distintos tipos de ambiente para cada una de estas variables.
