Monitoring the 2006 Fiji General Election

Pages 57-72 | Published online: 02 May 2017

Abstract

The government of the Fiji Islands invited several regional organisations to send observer teams to monitor the 2006 general election. At the end of the election period, the missions submitted to the government detailed reports of their observations and provided lists of recommendations, which they hoped the government would consider implementing in future elections. This article, based on the author’s first-hand observation of the election campaign and the voting process, considers some of the events occurring before, during and after the 2006 Fiji general election and relates them to the observers’ findings and recommendations.
