Development of an Instrument to Measure Student Use of Academic Success Skills

An Exploratory Factor Analysis

Abstract

This article describes the development of the Student Engagement in School Success Skills instrument including item development and exploratory factor analysis. The instrument was developed to measure student use of the skills and strategies identified as most critical for long-term school success that are typically taught by school counselors.

John Carey

John Carey is the Director of the Ronald H. Fredrickson Center for School Counseling Outcome Research and Evaluation and a Professor of School Counseling at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He has led several statewide evaluations of school counseling programs and has been recognized nationally for outcome research and leadership in school counseling reform.

Greg Brigman

Greg Brigman is a Professor of Counseling at Florida Atlantic University and has been a counselor educator 20 years. He consults with school districts to evaluate the impact of school counselor led evidence-based programs to improve student performance. Dr. Brigman has published extensively in journals related to the work of school counselors and has received research awards for his work.

Linda Webb

Linda Webb is a Senior Research Associate at Florida State University and has been a counselor educator interested in school counseling outcome research for 10 years. She consults with school district personnel in the use of evidence-based programs to improve student outcomes and has secured federal grant funding to evaluate research outcomes resulting from school counselor led interventions.

Elizabeth Villares

Elizabeth Villares is an Associate Professor of Counseling at Florida Atlantic University and has served as a teacher, school counselor, and guidance director at the secondary level. Her specializations include integrating technology in school counseling programs to improve data driven practices, collaborating with school counselors to develop action research and program evaluation projects, and the implementation of evidence based programs.

Karen Harrington

Karen Harrington is the Assistant Director of the Ronald H. Fredrickson Center for School Counseling Outcome Research and Evaluation at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She has served as lead evaluator on three Elementary and Secondary School Counseling grants and as consultant to districts involved in the Race to the Top initiative. She has provided professional development to school counselors in districts across the country and presented nationally on current research in school counseling.
