Impact Factor for Names: A Journal of Onomastics

According to Gemma Briggs, Senior Publishing Executive, Humanities, Maney Publishing, the 2012 Impact Factor for Names: A Journal of Onomastics has increased by 114% over 2011. It is now at 0·231 compared to 0·108 in 2011. Furthermore, its ranking is 122/160 in 2012 compared to 136/161 in 2011. It is important to note that in 2010 Names had no rating at all, so this is a very positive aspect for our journal.

The impact factor (IF) of an academic journal is a measure reflecting the average number of citations to recent articles published in the journal. It is frequently used as a proxy for the relative importance of a journal within its field, with journals with higher impact factors deemed to be more important than those with lower ones. The impact factor was devised by Eugene Gardfield, the founder of the Institute for Scientific Information. Impact factors are calculated yearly starting from 1975 for those journals that are indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (<http://en.wikipedia. org/wiki/Impact_factor> [accessed July 5 2013]). Information about the inclusion of Names in the Thomson Reuter ISI listed journals was first reported in the Editorial of Names 59:4 (2011), 189–190.

This information about the impact factor for Names is indeed good news, which reflects the hard work of the Editorial Board: (1) John Algeo (Emeritus, University of Georgia), (2) Edward Callary (Northern Illinois University), (3) Chris De Vinne (Notre Dame of Maryland University), (4) Thomas J. Gasque (Emeritus, University of South Dakota), (5) Margaret Lee (Hampton University), (6) Michael F. McGoff (Binghamton University, SUNY), (7) Lisa McNary (North Carolina State University), (8) Iman Nick (University of Cologne, Germany), (9) Peter Raper (University of the Free State, South Africa), (10) Jan Tent (Macquarie University), the Book Review Editor (Chris De Vinne, Notre Dame of Maryland University), and the authors themselves whose excellent work enhances the quality of the journal. The number of contributions has increased significantly over the past two years as well, which reflects effect of the impact factor.

Kelsie B. Harder Memorial Fund

The Kelsie B. Harder Memorial Fund was named for an outstanding teacher, scholar, and leader who, for many years, was the backbone of the American Name Society. Professor Harder was a renowned scholar of onomastics who served the ANS in many capacities including President of the Society (1982) and Editor of the journal (1966–1968; 1984–1987). He died in April of 2007. Contributions to the fund are used to support our educational programs. It is used primarily in support of students and upcoming scholars of onomastics. More information about Kelsie B. Harder is available at the following link: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelsie_B._Harder>.

Submissions to Names

Names, A Journal of Onomastics, publishes articles of general, theoretical, and topical interest, reviews of recent books and other significant resources, queries, notes, and comments of concern to onomastics. Reports of original research in onomastics as well as redactions and summaries of existing research are welcome. Names is a fully refereed journal; manuscripts of articles are read and evaluated anonymously by at least two qualified scholars. Membership in the American Name Society is not required for initial submission to Names; manuscripts from non-members and from scholars in related disciplines are encouraged. Once an article is accepted for publication in Names, the author must join the American Name Society.
