Theatre of Power: The Anglo-Norman Park at Earlspark, Co Galway, Ireland

 

Abstract

THIS PAPER EXAMINES the archaeological and historical evidence for a 13th-century park at Earlspark, Loughrea, Co Galway. This is the first detailed study of an Irish Anglo-Norman-period park to be published, and the site, which lies c 2 km south-east of the town of Loughrea, is exceptionally well preserved. It is documented in 1333, along with its deer, and field survey in the area has identified the park, which is defined by a mortared stone wall extending for 7.4 km and standing up to 2.6 m in height.

Cet article examine les témoignages archéologiques et historiques de l’existence d’un parc du 13ème siècle à Earlspark, Loughrea, comté de Galway (Irlande). Cette étude, la première étude détaillée d’un parc de la période anglo-normande à être publiée, concerne un site exceptionnellement bien préservé qui se trouve à environ 2 km au sud-est de la ville de Loughrea. On a une mention de ce site et des cerfs qui s’y trouvaient dans un document de 1333; une étude de terrain a permis d’identifier le parc, qui est cerné d’un mur de pierres et mortier de 7,4 km de long et s’élevant jusqu’à 2,6 m en hauteur.

Dieser Artikel untersucht die archäologischen und historischen Belege für einen Park aus dem 13 Jahrhundert in Earlspark, Loughrea, County Galway. Er ist die erste veröffentlichte detaillierte Untersuchung eines aus der irischen anglo-normannischen Periode stammenden Parks, und die Stätte, die etwa 2 km südlich der Stadt Loughrea liegt, ist außerordentlich gut erhalten. Sie wurde 1333, einschließlich ihres Wildbestandes, urkundlich erwähnt, und Feldforschungen auf dem Gebiet haben den Park identifiziert, der von einer mit Mörtel zusammengefügten Steinmauer definiert wird, die 7,4 km lang und bis zu 2,60 hoch ist.
