FROM THE EDITOR

This is the first issue published under the new arrangement with Maney Publishing. I hope that we are successful in retaining past readers as well as interesting new ones who will come to us because of the change of the journal’s name and the shift from just print publication to both print and online editions. There is a couplet in an old song that goes “Make new friends, but keep the old;/ One is silver and the other is gold,” which certainly expresses my sincerest wishes at this juncture, with the exception that I think that both are golden.

Faithful readers will notice the absence of the addenda in the back matter that always included such items as a list of the contents of back issues and the yearly financial report. The financial report will continue to be distributed at our annual conference, the annual conference program will be available at our website, and the contents of back issues will be available there and at the Maney website for the journal. This leaves more space in the journal itself to devote to articles, translations, reports, and reviews.

This issue is unusual in that in all but one instance there is one item in each category (articles, translations, etc.), the exception being reports. It is my pleasure to print, for the first time in the history of the journal, a response to a book review that we published (certain proof that someone read the last issue).

My thanks, as always, to my wonderful Editorial Board, and to Associate Editor and Book Review Editor, Levi Gibbs, who has returned to this side of the Pacific after an extended research trip to China. My thanks also to Vassar College, home institution of the President of CHINOPERL, Wenwei Du, and to the Center for Chinese Studies and the Confucius Institute of my home institution, University of Michigan, for their support for the journal.

David L. Rolston, Ann Arbor, MI, April 2013
