Abstract

brief biography of Friedrich Rathgen (1862-1942), the first Director of the Chemical Laboratory of the Royal Museums of Berlin, is presented. A detailed discussion of many of his most important scientific achievements is given with particular emphasis on the impact which his work had upon the development of archaeological conservation.
