Nanorheology of confined fluids

Pages 1170-1174 | Published online: 19 Jul 2013

Abstract

Recent advances in the nanorheology of confined fluids between two solid surfaces are reviewed. Under extreme confinement, the viscosity and elastic modulus of confined fluids are many orders of magnitude higher than in the bulk liquid. The stick - slip transition in confined fluids is accompanied by an abrupt increase in thickness. A generalised friction map as a function of velocity (or shear rate), load, and thickness of the lubricant is summarised.
