Effect of strain rate and thermal history on the constitutive behaviour of Al – Mg alloy AA 5182

Abstract

The effects of strain rate and thermal history on the constitutive behaviour of an Al – Mg alloy (AA 5182), were determined based on tensile experiments using a Gleeble 3500 thermomechanical simulator. The material was tested in both the as-cast and homogenised conditions and under strain rates of 10-4 to 1 s-1. With these strain rates, the work is most relevant to modelling of DC casting and one would expect large differences in the parameters of the equations describing the thermo-mechanical behaviour for rolling or extrusion. It is concluded, however, that the constitutive behaviour is independent of the thermal history. Comparison with literature data indicates that the constitutive behaviour is also independent of the deformation history between 350°C and 500°C. The combined hardening Sellars – Tegart (HST) equation with one parameter set is able to describe the constitutive behaviour for the effect of strain rate.
