Abstract
During the last 10 years, a new generation of work rolls has been introduced in hot strip mills. High speed steel (HSS) and enhanced indefinite chill (IC) rolls were introduced to replace high chromium (HiCr) rolls and IC rolls, respectively. Enhanced IC rolls have successfully replaced IC rolls in most mills, while HSS rolls are still in the 'trial phase' in many mills. The present status of enhanced IC and HSS rolls in various European mills is reviewed, and relevant experience presented. Outstanding problems requiring solution if the technology is to advance are considered.
