Abstract
The hot rolling of steel sheet and strip accounts today for a large part of the steel-rolling industry throughout the world. The production sequence for modern continuous hot rolling of steel sheet and strip is outlined, and the most popular configurations of rolling plant illustrated. Details of the engineering and production practices on continuous hot-strip mills from reheating furnaces, through the roughing andfinishing trains, to the run-out table and coilers are given, including rolls, roll preparation, and roll changing. The ancillary operations of hot-rolled sheet and coilfinishing are covered. Consideration is given to the weights and dimensions, and in particular to the quality and metallurgical aspects of the hot-rolled coil product. Brief mention is made of control and automation of the hot-rolling strip mill, and of the other minor techniques usedfor the hot rolling of strip and sheet.
