Abstract
The latest automatic inclusion-assessment instrument, the Quantimet 360, has been evaluated on the basis of its use as an on-line quality-control tool. It has been shown that once the instrument has stabilized electronically, the data obtained are in good agreement with data obtained by both traditional metallographic techniques and currently established analysing systems. It has been shown that a correlation exists between Quantimet 360 results and the Fox and JK counts. Considerable success has also been achieved in using the instrument as an on-line monitor of free-cutting steel and carbon steel rod quality.
