Strip guiding and gauge uniformity in breaking down and pendulum rolling

Pages 412-416 | Published online: 19 Jul 2013

Abstract

Guiding of strip in hot and cold breaking-down stages is achieved largely by the centralizing action o/the convex roll gap. Guiding in the pendulum process when rolling thin strip is by the centralizing action offront tension. The ingoing thickness is usually greater than on conventional mills, which use tension rolling, and the pass reduction is many times greater. The guiding by front tension thus takes place from a much earlier stage, and the large cross-section of the reduction zone facilitates cross-flow of material, where guiding has to correct transverse wedge of the ingoing stock or excessive strip crown owing to previous processes. The mechanics of guiding and their effect on gauge are discussed.
