Abstract
In this investigation En 52 steel has been electroslag refined and the improvement in its hot ductility assessed using hot-torsion tests. The electroslag refining improved the hot workability considerably. The temperature at which peak ductility is obtained increased from 1325K in unrefined (as-cast) steel to 1425 K in refined steel. The improvement in hot ductility in electroslag-refined steel has been attributed essentially to the removal of non-metallic inclusions and the reduction in sulphur content.
