Abstract
People's Art is a project concerned with visual art made by the great mass of working people on the mainland of Britain within the historical period which roughly coincides with the industrial revolution, beginning at its earliest date of 1750, but concentrating on the period from 1780 to the present day. In identifying and describing visual artby men and women, who include skilled workers, artisans, housewives, semi-skilled operatives, unskilled workers and labourers, the project (which consists of a book and an exhibition) illuminates a currently unstudied and little acknowledged element of our cultural heritage. Any discussion of people's art needs to acknowledge its relationship with folk art on the one hand and fine or academic art on the other.
