CRANIO Concepts: CRANIO’s international status

(Editor in Chief)

How many countries had articles published in the January 2014 issue of CRANIO? Would you believe nine? The countries, in order are: the United States, Czech Republic, Argentina, Iran, Italy, Brazil, Japan, China and The Netherlands. That’s quite a “geo-dental” accomplishment. In the April 2014 issue, Croatia was represented, and was added to the vast international list. The new countries represented in this July 2014 issue are Colombia and Spain. The countries with the most published articles this year are the United States, with six, and Italy and Brazil a respectable 2nd, tied with three published articles each. So far this year, we have published articles from 12 different countries (13 if you count the January editorial by Dr. Anne-Maree Cole of Australia), and we still have one issue to go!

Since Maney Publishing of Leeds and London, England and Philadelphia, PA acquired publishing rights to CRANIO in January, electronic submission of manuscripts has sped up the review process, which has actually increased the article flow. Authors, especially those from outside the United States, are pleased about shorter turn-around times, the result of not having to deal with expensive and time-consuming manuscript mailings. New manuscripts are entering the Editor in Chief’s office at a more rapid rate from worldwide contributors. While the editorial board is not yet overworked, we are using more qualified outside reviewers, out of necessity.

One of Maney Publishing’s leading innovations is the Advanced Articles system, where typeset, corrected articles are published online before actually appearing in a printed or online issue of CRANIO. These articles may also be identified for citation by a unique number - the digital object identifier (DOI).

At its annual February Board meeting in Chicago, The American Alliance of TMD Organizations moved to drop “American” from its name to allow more international organizations to gain membership to its current representation of some 12,000 practitioners. The Alliance of TMD Organizations has had multiple requests from groups and individuals outside the U.S.A. that have right-to-practice issues, and believe that the Alliance’s strength and experience could aid their cause, as well. Thanks to Kimberly Martin, Senior Publisher and Mark Simon, Publishing Director, who both attended the meeting, Maney Publishing reaffirmed the agreement that CRANIO is the official journal of the TMD Alliance, and will continue to give subscription and advertising discounts to Alliance group members, much to the delight of the Board.

Now that CRANIO is more accessible in your corner of the world, I invite you to take advantage of all its current features. Notably, the Maney Online platform, www.maneyonline.com/loi/crn, which allows advanced search and browse capabilities for current and archived content. We want you, the reader, to become more proficient and skilled in locating articles of interest to you, which have been published recently or in the past ten years. Who knows? With this valuable resource, you could be inspired to write and submit your own manuscript, and add your country’s name to our growing list of CRANIO-published countries.
