Abstract
Attitudes towards the evidence of the past have changed. Whatever the causes, one result is a free-floating past, unlocated in place or time. Attempts to re-anchor the past through reference to an intelligible present, whether by performance or commercial endeavour, deserve to be examined with some degree of skepticism.
