DNA degradation and protein peroxidation in cells exposed to hydroxyl free radicals

Abstract

The kinetics of DNA and protein damage in two lines of cultured cells exposed to radiation-generated hydroxyl free radicals were measured. The results show that DNA damage is a relatively late event, preceded by the formation of protein hydroperoxides which may play a role in the degradation of the DNA.
