The phonological processing of Chinese phonograms

Pages 177-194 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

Abstract

Three experiments were conducted to investigate the consistency effect and phonetic independence effect in Chinese characters. Four kinds of Chinese characters, consistent, inconsistent, exceptions phonograms and non-phonograms, were chosen as stimuli, and the results of a naming task showed that there existed consistency effect only in low-frequency characters, and the exception phonograms were named slowest. Experiment 2 was designed to observe the influence of family members, enemies and friends on naming of phonograms. The results showed significant facility effect of friends and inhibitory effect of enemies, which supported the proposition that the frequency and number of family members play an important role in phonological processing. In Experiment 3, low-frequency phonograms with dependent and independent phonetics were chosen as stimuli, and a significant phonetic-independence effect was observed, which supported the proposition that the independent phonetics can offer more phonological information, and are more helpful in activating the sounds of the family members and the phonograms themselves.
