Abstract
More than 125 years after the discovery of the causative parasites, human malaria remains a major global-health problem. Despite many important discoveries in the epidemiology and pathogenesis of the disease, and the availability of effective treatment and control measures, there was no decline in global malarial mortality from 1954 to 1997. The economic prospects of the countries in which malaria is endemic are closely related to the burden of the disease, a situation that calls for an enhanced, concerted effort from the global community in the fight against the disease.
This review explains the effects and limitations of the available control tools, summarises the extent to which they are currently employed, describes how their use could be improved, and discusses the particular importance of a vaccine in controlling the disease.
