Abstract

This paper reports the thermal and polarised spectral properties of Nd3+:Li3Ba2Y3(MoO4)8 crystal. The principal coefficients of thermal expansion along a, b and c axes were precisely measured to be 1·59 × 10–5, 1·74 × 10–5 and 2·19 × 10–5 K–1 respectively. The specific heat value is 0·44 J g–1 K–1 at 50°C. The polarised absorption and emission spectra of the crystal were investigated. The absorption cross-sections around 805 nm were determined to be 16·71 × 10–20, 4·31 × 10–20 and 6·19 × 10–20 cm2 for E//b, E//D 1 and E//D 2 respectively. The emission cross-sections σ em were determined to be 15·7 × 10–20 cm2 for E//b, 12·5 × 10–20 cm2 for E//D 1 and 8·0 × 10–20 cm2 for E//D 2 respectively. The fluorescence lifetime was determined to be 108 μs; fluorescence quantum efficiency η is 98%. These results may regard the Nd3+:Li3Ba2Y3(MoO4)8 crystal as a potential laser crystal material.
