Abstract

In this study, out‐of‐plane compressive experiments were carried out on an aluminium honeycomb core both dynamically and quasi‐statically. An obvious enhancement of about 25% was found for the dynamic loading experiments compared with the quasi‐static ones. Further investigation using the finite element method showed a good agreement with the experimental results and indicated differences in deformation at different loading rates. Finally, based on the simulation results, the explanation of the impact enhancement based on the inertia protected mechanism is validated.
