Rise and Fall of a Medieval Trade Centre: Economic Change from Viking Haithabu to Medieval Schleswig Revealed by Stable Isotope Analysis

Abstract

Viking Haithabu and its successor, the medieval town of Schleswig, were important international trade centres. Human skeletal finds spanning a period of approximately 400 years represent the bodily relics of the former inhabitants, who witnessed the rise and fall of these trade centres. Analysis of δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N from bone collagen was performed to reconstruct and detect changes in dietary preferences over time. A comparison with the respective isotopic data obtained from a large archaeofaunal sample resulted in a classic ‘mixing muddle’ that could only be deciphered using isotope mass balance mixing models applied on an individual basis. It was found that the overall subsistence economy shifted over time from a focus on fishing to one based predominantly on farming. The move to utilizing a new main source of protein did not impair overall protein supply. In addition, changing living conditions experienced by the inhabitants of Schleswig may have led to a change in infant nursing strategy.

Haithabu à l’époque des Vikings et son successeur, la ville médiévale de Schleswig, furent d'importants centres de commerce internationaux. Les ossements humains qui y furent découverts, couvrant une période d'approximativement quatre cents ans, représentent les vestiges corporels des habitants d'autrefois, qui furent témoins de l'essor et du déclin de ces centres commerciaux. On a procédé à des analyses de d¹³C et d¹⁵N provenant de collagène osseux afin de reconstituer et de détecter des modifications dans les préférences diététiques au fil du temps. La comparaison avec les données isotopiques respectives obtenues à partir d'un important échantillon d'archéofaune a mené à un mélange confus qui ne pouvait être déchiffrée qu'en utilisant des modèles de mélange de balances de masse isotopique appliqués sur base individuelle. On a constaté que l’économie de subsistance générale est passée peu à peu de la pêche vers une économie principalement fondée sur l'agriculture. Le transfert vers une nouvelle source principale de protéines n'a toutefois pas affecté l'approvisionnement général en protéines. De plus, les conditions de vie changeantes éprouvées par les habitants de Schleswig ont peut-être mené à un changement dans la stratégie d'allaitement des bébés. Translation by Isabelle Gerges.

Das wikingerzeitliche Haithabu und sein Nachfolger, die benachbarte mittelalterliche Stadt Schleswig, waren wichtige internationale Handelszentren. Menschliche Skelettfunde aus einem Zeitraum von etwa 400 Jahren repräsentieren die körperlichen Hinterlassenschaften der früheren Bewohner, die Zeugen des Aufstiegs und Niederganges dieser Handelszentren wurden. Analysen der δ¹³C- und δ¹⁵N-Werte von Knochenkollagen wurden durchgeführt, um Veränderungen der Ernährungspräferenzen im Laufe der Zeit zu erkennen und zu rekonstruieren. Ein Abgleich dieser Werte mit den entsprechenden tierischen Isotopendaten, die aus einem sehr umfangreichen Faunenmaterial gewonnen wurden, mündete in einem klassischen, zunächst nichtauflösbaren Mischungsgewirr von einzelnen Nahrungskomponenten. Dieses konnte nur anhand von Mischungsmodellen unter Einbeziehung der Isotopen-Massenbilanz auf individueller Basis ‘entziffert’ werden. Es zeigte sich, die sich die grundsätzliche Subsistenzökonomie im Laufe der Zeit veränderte: Der Schwerpunkt verlagerte sich vom Fischfang hin zur Landwirtschaft. Allerdings verschlechterte der Schritt zur Nutzung einer neuen Haupteiweißquelle die Gesamteiweißversorgung nicht. Weiterhin könnten die Veränderungen der Lebensbedingen, zu Veränderungen des mütterlichen Stillverhaltens geführt haben. Translation by Heiner Schwarzberg.
