Abstract

A method of synthesizing a novel unsymmetrical carbocyanine sensitizing dye is reported. The formula of the carbocyanine sensitizing dye was determined by element analysis. The melting point, infrared spectrum and mass spectrum were found and nuclear magnetic resonance was carried out, which indicated that the sensitizing dye had been successfully synthesized. Additionally, the dye was used as a spectral sensitizer in various emulsions. It was found that the dye with the designed structure featured high sensitizing efficiency with low fog and without leaving colour residues in the developed emulsion layers. This indicates that the use of the novel carbocyanine sensitizing dye is worth being extened in emulsions for different purposes. Also reported is the application of inducing the red shift of the λ max of green sensitizing dyes, developing a new approach to fine-tuning the λ max of dyes to make up the absorption deficiency and improve the colour reproduction efficiency of emulsions.
