Abstract

Pseudocrossidium perpapillosum M.J.Cano & J.A.Jiménez is described and illustrated as a new South American species from Argentina and Chile. It differs from other species of Pseudocrossidium R.S.Williams by the costa excurrent in an awn, elliptical in cross-section, with 4–5(6) guide cells, marginal laminal cells differentiated with rounded, thin-walled and papillose cells, paracostal distal cells with 1–2(4) bi- to quadrifurcate, long papillae, and perichaetial leaves differentiated.

This research was carried out with financial support from the Spanish ‘Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación’ (Project CGL2010-15959/BOS co-financied by FEDER and ‘Ramón y Cajal subprogram’ co-financied by the European Social Fund) and ‘Fundación Séneca-Agencia de Ciencia y Tecnología de la Región de Murcia’ (project 11932/PI/09). We thank A Schäfer-Verwimp, P Sollman and the curators of the herbaria cited in the text for assistance during our visit to the herbaria or the loan of specimens. María J Cano thanks the staff of the Departamento de Botánica, Universidad de Concepción (Concepción) for assistance during her stay in Chile. Thanks are also given to M Laínz for the Latin diagnosis.
