Infrapatellar fat pad lesions: theoretical considerations and practical implications

Pages 11-16 | Published online: 19 Jul 2013

Abstract

Disorders of the infrapatellar fat pad are important to consider in the differential diagnosis of anterior knee pain. Knowledge about the microanatomy of this region and the areas which are prone to injury can aid the physiotherapist in providing appropriate management. This paper provides a brief description of the morphology, physiology and biomechanics of this important but under-recognised, anatomical entity. In addition, the enthesis organ concept is described and its relevance to physiotherapy practice outlined using the infrapatellar fat pad as an example.
