Abstract
An optimisation-based extruder screw design methodology using available numerical modelling routines of the plasticating process, able to deal with various process criteria simultaneously, is applied to both single and twin screw machines. The general specifications of the method and its main features are presented. The results obtained for several examples are discussed. Finally, an attempt is reported to validate the method experimentally. Generally, the results are encouraging, although the success of the method is strongly dependent on the capabilities of the modelling routine used.
