Characterisation of high energy planetary milled W based heavy alloys

Pages 224-235 | Published online: 19 Jul 2013

Abstract

The present work describes the development of microstructure and structural parameters of W based heavy alloys in planetary milled and annealed condition with different starting materials in terms of powder preparation and material. Two types of heavy alloy system (W–7Ni–3Fe and W–7Ni–2Ni–1Co) are chosen for this study. The structural parameters are calculated after Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction (XRD) data. Development of microstructures has been studied in terms of grain morphology, powder size, crystallite size and strain and lattice parameters of corresponding phases. The shape anisotropy of milled and annealed powders has been correlated with crystallite size and texture coefficient of different crystallographic planes. TEM and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) studies have been carried out to characterise the finer details of nanosized particles of the heavy alloys for the first time.
