Using real-time particle size analysis to optimise aluminium smelting

Pages 291-294 | Published online: 19 Jul 2013

Abstract

The Hall–Héroult electrolytic process used throughout the world to produce aluminium from alumina is highly energy intensive. Norsk Hydro ASA is a major player in this market. At the company's sites in Norway a plentiful supply of hydroelectric power lightens the environmental burden associated with production, but energy consumption remains a major concern. Thus understanding and improving the performance of the electrolysis circuit remains an important operational objective.
