Tool materials selection for friction stir welding of L80 steel

Pages 610-613 | Published online: 04 Dec 2013

Abstract

A numerical analysis framework for evaluating the tool deformation during friction stir welding of steel has been developed. The methodology was developed by using the measured thermomechanical conditions and thermomechanical finite element model. This methodology successfully described the difference in commercially pure tungsten and W–Re tool. Using this technique, the mechanical properties of the candidate tool materials can be evaluated and can be used as a rapid screening tool.
