Between archives and the site: the 19th-century iron and steel industry in the Monklands, Central Scotland

Abstract

A case is made that attention should shift from the archaeology of process, guided largely by the archival evidence, to the archaeology of practice by scrutinizing the material record. Holistic Context Analysis applied to the industrial soils and finds at Moffat Upper Steam Forge has led to a more coherent and realistic picture of construction and demolition at the site, as well as of its puddling industry, than could be learned from the historical narrative of the iron and steel industry in the Monklands, the most industrialized part of Scotland in the 19th century.

Es wird argumentiert, dass man die Aufmerksamkeit von der Archäologie der Prozesse, die zum größten Teil durch geschriebene Archive geleitet wird, hin zu einer Archäologie der Praxis lenken sollte, bei der die materiellen Überreste untersucht werden. Die Holistic Context Analysis, holistische Analyse des Kontextes, wurde auf industrielle Böden und Funde in der Moffat Upper Steam Forge angewandt und ergab ein kohärenteres und realistischeres Bild vom Bau und Abriss dieser Einrichtung und ihrer Puddelarbeit, als sich aus den historischen Aufzeichnungen über die Eisen- und Stahlindustrie in den Monklands, dem im 19. Jahrhundert am stärksten industrialisierten Gebiet Schottlands, ableiten ließ.

Si sostiene la tesi della necessità di spostare l'attenzione dall'archeologia del processo, in gran parte basata sui documenti scritti, a quella della pratica, esaminando attentamente i reperti materiali. La Holistic Context Analysis, analisi olistica contestuale, applicata ai suoli industriali e ai ritrovamenti presso la fonderia di Moffat ha portato a una visione complessiva della costruzione e della demolizione del sito, oltre che della sua attività di puddellaggio, più realistica di quella che si poteva ottenere dalla narrativa storica sull'industria siderurgica delle Monklands, la regione più industrializzata della Scozia nel XIX secolo.

En este artículo se critica la atención que hoy en día se presta a la arqueología de procesos, que se basa principalmente en el estudio de textos escritos, y se aboga por un cambio hacia la arqueología de la práctica, que analiza los restos materiales. La imagen del proceso de construcción y demolición en el yacimiento, así como de su industria, que proporcionan los resultados del análisis holístico de contextos (Holistic Context Analysis) aplicados a la tierra y a los hallazgos industriales de la forja Moffat Upper Steam resulta más coherente y realista que la que se pudiera obtener a través del estudio de los documentos históricos relacionados con la industria del hierro y del acero en Monklands, la región más industrializada de Escocia en el siglo XIX.
