The north service range, Aston Hall, Birmingham: excavation and recording, 2004

Abstract

Excavation has exposed the foundations of the early 17th-century north service range of Aston Hall, Birmingham. Consideration of the remains alongside documentary evidence and comparative analysis has allowed the room functions, and something of the range's structural character, to be established. In the 17th century it contained a washhouse, brewhouse, bakehouse, laundry and dairy, with a large cellar beneath and a building straddling a water culvert. Outhouses, a large icehouse and a new laundry were added later. With its precocious use of brick in ancillary buildings, the range occupies a significant place in the construction history of the West Midlands.

Ces fouilles ont mis au jour les fondations du bâtiment de service nord, remontant au début du 17e siècle à Aston Hall, Birmingham. La recherche de ces vestiges, liée à l'étude des preuves documentaires et à une analyse comparative, a permis de pouvoir établir la fonction des pièces et la structure du bâtiment de service. Au 17e siècle, celui-ci comprenait lavoir, brasserie, fournil, lingerie, et laiterie, avec une grande cave en-dessous et un bâtiment chevauchant une conduite d'eau. Des communs, une grande glacière et une nouvelle lingerie ont été ajoutés plus tard. Jahrhundert umfasste er ein Waschhaus, ein Brauhaus, ein Backhaus, eine Wäscherei und eine Milchkammer, sowie einen darunter gelegenen großen Keller und ein Gebäude über einem unterirdischen Wasserkanal. Außengebäude, ein großes Eishaus und eine neue Wäscherei wurden später hinzugefügt. Mit seiner frühen Verwendung von Ziegelsteinen für Nebengebäude nimmt dieser Gebaüde einen wichtigen Platz in der Baugeschichte der West Midlands ein.

En las excavaciones se descubrieron los cimientos de principios del siglo XVII del edificio norte de servicio doméstico de Aston Hall (Birmingham). Tras estudiar los restos, la evidencia documental y un análisis comparativo, se ha podido establecer la función para cada habitación, además de parte del carácter estructural del edificio. En el siglo XVII éste contenía un lavadero, una destilería, un horno de cocer pan, una lavandería y una lechería, además de un sótano de grandes dimensiones y un edificio construído sobre una alcantarilla. Posteriormente se añadieron otras dependencias, una gran nevera y una nueva lavandería. Esta edificación, con su precoz uso del ladrillo en los edificios de servicios, ocupa un puesto de gran relevancia en la historia de la construcción de la región de West Midlands.
