Abstract

As opposed to conventional sub-zero treatment to transform retained austenite, deep cryogenic treatment at liquid nitrogen temperatures has been claimed to enhance the wear resistance of tool steels by additional hitherto ill defined phenomena. In summarising current knowledge at the time of writing (1996), this review and the following paper sought to clarify the underlying mechanisms.
