Abstract
The case of a young male who sought chiropractic treatment for neck pain is presented. Immediately after an upper cervical spinal manipulation (adjustment), he developed a vertebral artery dissection and cerebellar stroke. The literature is reviewed regarding the incidence, and the current estimate is thought to be one such event in 400,000 manipulations. The safety of the procedure is still under scrutiny, and future research of higher quality is needed. We make a few recommendations in order to facilitate such research.
