The search for the meaning of sciatica: application of the scientific method

Pages 85-89 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

Abstract

Aim: To understand the remote lower limb manifestations of low back problems.

Methods: The literature was reviewed using the term 'sciatica' on databases Pubmed, Embase, TRIP, CINAHL, Amed, and other resources, to include historical references in the 19th century and later.

Results: The search for the aetiology of sciatica started to bear fruit in the 19th century by the use of scientific method, and the development of clinical tests. The pace of change increased in the 20th century by the use of spinal surgery and advances in imaging.

Conclusions: Questions remain on the relationship of sciatica to the underlying clinical conditions both in terms of diagnosis and of severity.
