Abstract

Objective: To examine the evidence base for the use of therapeutic ultrasound for soft tissue injury.

Subjects and Methods: A literature review using the PubMed and Cochrane databases for randomised controlled trials using therapeutic ultrasound for soft tissue injuries.

Results: Of seven good quality studies, only two showed clinical benefit.

Conclusions: The current extensive use of therapeutic ultrasound for soft tissue injury is not supported by evidence that is ranked highly in the hierarchy of evidence, e.g.randomised controlled trials. There were limitations in this study's search criteria. Recommendations for further research are made.
