Abstract

The soft tissue factors which result in the equilibrium position of the tooth in the dental arch are reviewed. The experimental evidence available would indicate that equilibrium position of the tooth is not a simple pressure relationship, but is the result of forces from the cheeks, tongue, muscles of mastication, the periodontal tissues and the growth of the tissues.
