Pages 185-194 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

Abstract

At a time when Charlotte Brontë was out– growing her dependence on the imaginary world of Angria, the stimulation provided by her experience of Brussels and, particularly the discipline and challenges imposed by her teacher, M. Heger, were instrumental in forming the great literature she subsequently wrote. Evidence of this influence is manifest in all her novels.
