Are You Anybody, Miss Snowe?

Pages 223-228 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

Abstract

This is the text of a talk given in Brussels on the occasion of the Brontë Society Excursion to Brussels in October 2003. A significant aspect of Villette is the way Charlotte Brontë posits a reader who is addressed numerous times by the narrator, Lucy Snowe. Peeck argues that the character of Lucy Snowe is partly realized by means of her relationship to the fictitious reader in Villette.
