Influence of uranium on the microstructure and mechanical properties of type 416 stainless steel

Pages 43-50 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

Abstract

Uranium was added to laboratory heats of Type 416 stainless steel to give two series of steels of 0.15 and 0.30% sulphur content at various uranium-sulphur ratios. Material was hot-rolled to 1/2-inch thick plate, and also hot-extruded to 3/4-inch diameter rod. At the U: S ratio of approximately 4:1, the wrought steels contained globular sulphides instead of the usual stringers. This change was accompanied by an increase in the transverse ductility of the plate, up to the level of the longitudinal ductility, and also allowed cold upsetting and cold swaging operations to be carried out without the usual surface bursting that is characteristic of resulphurized steels. It is considered that the addition of uranium changed the chemical composition of the sulphides to a form that was nonplastic at hot working temperatures.
