Aqueous reduction of sulphur dioxide by pyrrhotite to elemental sulphur

Pages 551-561 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

Abstract

Sulphur dioxide reacts with natural or synthetic pyrrhotite in an aqueous system, forming elemental sulphur. and ferrous sulphate solution according to the reaction

2SO2 + FeS → 2SO + FeSO4

The effects of reductant, quantity of reductant, pressure of sulphur.dioxide, agitation, temperature and presence of impurities on the rate of reaction were studied. Elemental sulphur in the leach residue was recovered by dissolution: with ammonium sulphide solution or by volatilization. The unreacted pyrrhotite, after suitable treatment, was recycled to the process. The presence of certain metals in the solution adversely affected the reaction. The addition of coal promoted the formation of elemental sulphur.
