Pages 245-251 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

Abstract

A study of the formation of indented {112¯2} twin interfaces in zirconium shows that the sides of the indentations that form at the free surface are parallel to the {101¯1} planes containing the twinning direction; thus, the formation of indentations can be explained by a cross-slip mechanism. The conditions favoring the formation of indentations are identified as those producing a large twinning shear perpendicular to the crystal surface. The vast majority of the indentations occurred at the re-entrant corner formed between the surface of the twin and that of the matrix. These conditions are discussed in terms of the stress concentration factor resulting from the change, caused by twinning, in the geometry of the surface, the interaction between dislocations gliding on the twinning plane and obstacles in their paths and the accommodation slip occurring near the twin interfaces.
