The Reaction of Titanium with Selenium Vapour

Abstract

The kinetics of reaction of coupons of annealed titanium with pure selenium vapour have been investigated by the thermogravimetric method over the temperature range 400–550° C and for total selenium pressures from 0.1 to 32 torr. The reaction kinetics were essentially parabolic under all conditions, although brief induction periods were sometimes observed at the lower temperatures. The parabolic rate constant varied systematically as the 0.8 power of the partial pressure of Se2, but was independent oftemperature over fairly extensive temperature ranges at all selenium pressures studied. X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe analyses showed the reaction product to be metal-rich Ti1+xSe2.

Résumé

La cinétique de réaction d'échantillons de titane recuit et des vapeurs de sélénium pur a été étudiee par thermogravimétrie pour des températures variant de 400 á 550° C et pour des pressions totales de sélénium de 0.1 à 32 torr. La cin;amp;#x00E9;tique de réaction est essentiellement parabolique même s'il y a des périodes brèves à faible tempèrature où il y a peu de réaction. Le taux de réaction augméente avec le 0.8 puissance de la pression partielle de Se2, mais il est indépendant de la température sur une assez grande échelle de température à toutes les pressions étudiees. Le seul produit de réaction est du Ti1+xSe2 riche en métal, selon les études par rayon-X et par microsonde électronique.
