Review of the Effects of Corrosion Inhibitors in Coal-Water Slurry Pipelines

Abstract

Review of the literature has shown that: (i) corrosion control in coal slurry pipelines has been achieved by the use of chromate as an inhibitor; (ii) considerable loss in caking properties of metallurgical coals subjected to hydraulic transportation has been observed; (iii) additives such as lime and alkalies adversely affected the caking properties of metallurgical coals and (iv)other than alkalies, very little work has been done on the effect of corrosion inhibitors on the caking properties of coals. The effects of corrosion inhibitors on the caking properties of Canadian coals, determination of the effectiveness of non-toxic complexes as potential inhibitors, screening of luminescent organic compounds for their use as inhibitors in coal slurry pipelines and petrographic examination of Canadian coals subjected to hydraulic transportation are problem areas which require further investigation.

Résumé

Une revue de la documentation a démontré que: (i) une maîtrise de la corrosion dans les pipe-lines de suspension de charbon et d'eau resulte de l'utilisation du chromate comme inhibiteur; (ii) une perte importante des propriétés d'agglutination des charbons métallurgique soumis au transport hydraulique a été observée; (iii) des additifs tels que la chaux et les alcalins ont eu des effets nocifs sur les proprietes d'agglutination des charbons métallurgiques et (iv) part les alcalins, peu de travaux n'ont été effectués sur à l'effet des inhibiteurs de la corrosion sur les propriétés d'agglutination du charbon.

Les effets des inhibiteurs de la corrosion sur les propriétés d'agglutination des charbons canadiens, la détermination de l'efficacité des complexes non-toxiques comme inhibiteurs virtuels, le c1assement des composés organiques luminescents pour l'usage en tant qu'inhibiteurs dans les pipe-lines de suspension de charbon et l'examen pétrographique des charbons canadiens soumis au transport hydraulique sont tous des secteurs de difficultés pouvant faire l'objet d'etudes supplémentaires.
