Analysis of Carbon in Iron and Steel Using A Solid-Oxide Galvanic Cell to Measure CO2

Pages 285-287 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

Abstract

A solid-oxide galvanic cell technique was applied for the determination of carbon in iron and steel. A metal sample containing known quantities of carbon was heated in a SiC resistance furnace at a temperature of about 1700 K, and was combusted in a stream of pure oxygen. The partial pressure of oxygen in the gas phase was measured down stream from the SiC resistance furnace with the aid of the electrochemical cell; Pt/air/ZrO2(CaO)/O2(+CO2)/Pt. The carbon content in the metal sample was determined from the change in e.m.f. of the cell:

[wt%C]=4800nO2 0 F/RTW∫∆Edt

where n o2 o is the flow rate of pure oxygen at the inlet of the SiC combustion furnaceF is the Faraday constant R is the gas constant t is temperature of the cell W is sample weight, ∆E is change in e.m.f., and t is time.

Résumé

Une technique utilisant une cellule galvanique d'oxydes solides a été appliquée à la détermination du carbone dans le fer et l'acier. Un échantillon de métal contenant une quantité connue de carbone est chauffé dans un four à résistances de SiC jusqu'à une température d'environ 1700°K puis brûle dans un courant d'oxygène pur. La pression partielle d'oxygène dans la phase gazeuse est mesurée à la sortie du four en utilisant la cellule électrochimique, Pt/air/ZrO2(CaO)/O2( + CO2)/Pt. La teneur en carbone de l'échantillon de metal est déterminée a partir de la variation de f.e.m. de la cellule;

[pd %C]=4800nO2 0 F/RTW∫∆Edt

n o2 est la vitesse d'écoulement de l'oxygène pur à l'entrée du four, Fest la constante de Faraday R la constante des gaz t la température de la cellule W le poids de l' échantillon, ∆E la variation de la f.e.m. et t le temps.
