Abstract
Commercial quality low-carbon steel strip, previously cold reduced 60%, was initially recrystallized at 705°C for times of 30 min and 24 h to produce material of two initial grain sizes. The recrystallized strip was cold deformed at room temperature in the range 0–28% (equivalent tensile deformation) and annealed in the range 610–715°C for 10min in order to recrystallize the material for a second time. The response of the material to the amount of prior deformation as well as annealing temperature was observed by following changes in yield strength, tensile strength, uniform elongation, total elongation and recrystallized grain size.
It was found that with prior deformations in the range 21–28% and with a high annealing temperature, 705°C, sheet suitable for deep drawing operations could be produced by this anneal-strain-anneal sequence. The results suggest that an anneal-strain-anneal cycle could be incorporated into a continuous process to consistently produce high formability material from cold-rolled sheet steel without the need for the special steelmaking practices required by the continuous processes currently available.
