Thermodynamic Properties of Zinc Antimonides

Abstract

The EMF method has been employed to determine the thermodynamic properties of the following intermediate phases in the zinc-antimony system: α-ZnSb; β-Zn4Sb3; γ-Zn4Sb3 and η-Zn3Sb2. The heat and entropy of transformation has also been calculated for the polymorphic transition β → γ. The eutectoidal decomposition of ζ-Zn3Sb2 into β-Zn4Sb3 and Zn has been confirmed, while no evidence was found for phase transformation reported previously at 300°C.

Les propriétés thermodynamiques des phases intermédiaires α-ZnSb; β-Zn4Sb3; γ-Zn4Sb3 et η-Zn3Sb2 du système zinc-antimine ont été determinées par la mesure de la force électro-motrice. La chaleur et l'entropie de réaction de la transition polymorphique Zn4Sb3 β → γ ont également été calculées. On a pu confirmer l'hypothèse de la dècomposition eutectoidale du ζ-Zn3Sb2 en Zn et β-Zn4Sb3, mais non celle de la transformation de phase qui devait se produire à 300°C.
