Manganese and Its Importance to Nineteenth-Century Metallurgy

Abstract

This paper is intended as a brief introduction to the papers on ferromanganese which follow. The emphasis is on people and their personal contributions towards the solutions of problems or the development of a product, contributions made at a time when personal ambition and drive could bring rich material rewards. The four people mentioned: Heath, Mushet, Bessemer and Hadfield were all confident Victorian scientistengineers, individualists to a man and major contributors to the technology of ferromanganese and to its indispensable role in modern steelmaking.

Résumé

Ces quelques commentaires n'ont pour but que de servir d'introduction aux publications sur le ferro-manganèse qui vont suivre. Nous mettrons l'accent sur les individus et sur leurs contributions personnelles à la solution des problèmes ou au développement d'un produit, contributions faites à une époque où la volonté et l'ambition personnelles pouvaient apporter de riches gratifications matérielles. Les quatre personnes mentionnées: Heath, Mushet, Bessemer et Hadfield étaient tous des scientistes-ingénieurs Victoriens très confiants, tous des individualistes qui ont apporté des contributions majeures à la technologie du ferro-manganèse et à son rôle indispensable dans l'aciérage moderne.
