Weld Metal Fracture Modes in a Series of HSLA Steel Weldments

Abstract

A series of welds were made by the Submerged Arc Welding process using a single base plate but different flux and wire combinations. The microstructure-mechanical property relationship of the welds was studied. In addition to the normal ductile and cleavage fracture modes expected for weld metals of the composition range studied, extensive grain boundary fracture (along prior austenite grain boundaries) was found in one weld that had a fully acicular ferrite microstructure. Scanning Auger and conventional scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the composition and microstructure at the grain boundaries in the weld metal.

Résumé

Une série de soudures a été réalisée en employant un arc submergé pour différentes combinaisons de fondants et de tiges à souder. La relation entre la microstructure et les propriétés mécaniques des soudures a été déterminée. En plus des modes normaux de rupture pour ce type de soudure, une fracture intergranulaire prononcée a été observée dans une soudure qui possédait une microstructure de ferrite aciculaire. Les techniques de microscopie électronique à balayage et d'Auger en balayage ont été utilisées pour caractériser la composition et la microstructure aux joints de grains de la soudure.
